Laugharne castle stands on a low ridge, overlooking the Tay river estuary, have been the inspiration for artists such as J. Turner, and authors such as Dylan Thomas and Richard Hughes.
As one of the fortresses controlling the ancient road along the south Wales coast line, the castle started out as a Norman ringwork constructed in the early 12th century and constantly changed ownership. From the mid 13th century until the end of the 14th century the castle belonged to the de Brian family. It was, however, taken by Welsh princes on three occasions during the 13th century. In Tudor times the castle passed to Sir John Perrott, he did not find the medieval castle to his lavish taste and built a mansion on the site. During the Civil War the castle, a Royalist stronghold, was besieged by the Roundheads and cannonballs have been found embedded in the walls.
