Dryslwyn Castle was built on the top of steep hill fort which is above the Towy River, offering excellent views of Paxtons tower to the South West and Carreg Cennen to the West. It was a native Welsh castle much of which has been revealed by excavation. It is believed that the castle has been occupied by the Princes of Deheubarth, was then taken by the forces of King Edward I in 13th century. Scant remains of a hall and keep walls survive of the castle besieged and undermined by Edward I. Dryslwyn was later betrayed to Owain Glyn Dwr, the famous Welsh nationalist, in 15th century. When he withdrew from the castle, the English moved back in and subsequently looted and destroyed parts of the castle.
